Hi Students - I apologize for the blog posting not going up earlier than now - I had a medical emergency in my family today and it prevented me from posting.
If you are reading this though, a reminder that we will be laying cardboard down in the Naturescape plot out by the adventure playground tomorrow morning - so wear older clothes and boots if you have them. After announcements, we will head outside and lay some cardboard down along what will be pathways. Then a truck will come in - it's called a slinger truck - and it will "shoot" soil onto the area that the backhoes dug up last Thursday. The truck and driver will then leave to pick up a second load - as they leave, we will lay cardboard over the soil that has just been "slung". Then, the slinger truck will come back and sling mulch - a mixture of composted leaves and soil - over top the cardboard.
We will then let this layering of soil, cardboard and mulch, sit for the next two weeks - hopefully it will rain lots - and the cardboard will begin to decompose and provide shelter for worms and bacteria, that will speed up the decomposing process. On November 29th - two weeks tomorrow! - we will be planting native plants in the area, which we will then tend to over the winter, water in the spring, and watch grow over your grade 7 and 8 years - one day you will come back and see great trees where we planted small seedlings!
Anyways, I'm very excited for this process and hope you will be too - we are creating an outdoor classroom! We will be working both tomorrow and on the 29th, with Ms. Roberts, Madame Couture's, and Monsieur LeBlonds classes.
Keep an eye on the weather - if it's raining, wear a raincoat!
Secret word - SLINGER!
